Stuart Baxter’s men put themselves in a great position to make it to the knockout stages of the AFCON following a second-half strike from Bongani Zungi. The goal was South Africa’s first goal at the AFCON finals since Mandla Masongo’s goal against Ghana at the 2015 tournament. Bafana Bafana went into the game following a narrow defeat to Cote d’Iviore in their opening fixture.
The game started out with a slow tempo with both sides employing a cautious approach to the game following their poor results from the first game. South Africa had more of the ball but gave the ball away cheaply to the Namibians who failed to properly threaten the defence of the Bayana Bayana. South Africa had some chances which were few and far apart.
Sibusiso Vilakazi was at the end of a lovely move for Bayana Bayana but the Mamelodi Sundowns star rushed his shot instead of taking another shot which would have given him a better angle to find the net. Hlompho Kekana also had a chance to put Bafana Bafana of South Africa ahead when he let a ferocious shot from range fly but he failed to hit the target.

Highly rated winger Percy Tau had what will be largely considered as the best chance of the game but his shot was straight at the Namibian goalkeeper, Kazapua. While Namibia never really got into the game, the fans of the Bafana Bafana went into the break knowing that the breakthrough could not be far and hoped to begin the second half on the front foot.
The breakthrough finally came in the second half after some lovely play from Percy Tau, his corner kick privided the assist for the winning goal. The Brighton and Hove Albion winger provided a sublime assist by floating the ball into the box for Amiens FC star Bongani Zungu who diverted the ball into the back of the net with a fine header. The goal gave the South Africans more confidence and they looked to score more goals by improving their attacking plays.
Percy Tau had two chances to increase the lead of the 1996 AFCON Champions but his shots were straight at the goalkeeper. Mamelodi Sundowns star, Themba Zwane continued to dictate the tempo of the game from midfield and his long range passes were a constant threat to Namibia. Stuart Baxter had held on to his substitutions till the dying moments of the game and he made the final two substitutions in the last five minutes of regular time.

Bafana Bafana lie in third place on the Group D log tied on points with Cote d’Ivoire but the Elephants are ahead because of their head to head record. South Africa would be able to secure qualification into the next round if they can secure victory in their next game. However, they face a tough test as they face the Atlas Lions of Morocco on monday in their final group match.
